NORMAN ROCKWELL MUSEUM
Peter Rockwell Sculpture Garden
Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Project Data-
Date: 1993
Size: 1/4 acre
Context: Museum grounds in western Massachusetts

Project Description:
The schematic landscape design for the sculpture garden is prominently located on the grounds of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The purpose of the design was to create a sculpture garden for Peter Rockwell’s (Norman Rockwell’s son) 7’ tall gargoyle playscape and ornamental chairs. The gargoyle is the garden’s focal point and is easily viewed by all visitors to the museum. The sculpture is surrounded by an A.D.A. accessible play surface and children are encouraged to climb about the faces. The design includes a stone retaining/seating wall, benches, a picnic area, and plantings that accentuate the artwork. The existing belt of trees around the garden is strengthened with understory trees and shrubs to screen the bus parking area beyond.

EDC Principal Thomas Elmore worked with Martha Lyon to prepare the schematic design, which the museum approved and then set the gargoyle into place as designed.
