AMHERST
COLLEGE
Webster Garden
Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts
Project Data-
Date: 1998
Size: 10 acres
Context: Private Liberal Arts College, Central Massachusetts
Construction Date: 1998
Project Description:
An imposing sculpture of Noah Webster defines the southern edge of a circular lawn in Amherst College’s oldest residential quadrangle. The large sculpture floats in the landscape behind Frost Library. The garden’s design ties the sculpture to the larger landscape and gives prominence to this campus focal point. A central granite terrace lies at the figure’s feet. Curving beds of perennials and bulbs flank the terrace, adding a lush, seasonal display of color and texture. Flowering trees and perennials behind the sculpture will screen the library beyond. Two teak benches face one another on the granite terrace, allowing visitors a spot for quiet contemplation.
EDC Principal Thomas Elmore supported the design team and was Principal-In-Charge of construction documentation and construction observation while with another firm.
