GREENFIELD ENERGY PARK
A Sustainable Urban Park
Greenfield, Massachusetts
Project Datai
Date: 1998-2000
Size: 1.0 acre
Context: Greenfield Center at apex of RR Tracks
Construction Date: Phase II and I: October 1999
Project Description:
The Town of Greenfield, in partnership with the Northeast Sustainable Energy
Association, has created a community park for Greenfield residents and visitors.
Sustainable urban design is one of the park’s many themes. This urban park
is an important part of the town’s revitalization, which has created an outdoor
activity center within the center of town. Several features of this one-acre
park include educational exhibits, an amphitheater, a caboose café, organic
gardening plots, a main gathering area, an interpretive and educational trail
about the history of transportation in Greenfield, and native plant communities
throughout, all within the theme of sustainable urban design. Recycled materials
were used as much as possible and long-term maintenance was taken into consideration
throughout the design and construction detailing process.
EDC Principal Thomas Elmore was Principal-In-Charge of Design Development,
final contract documents, and contract administration prior to leaving the
design firm of record.
