Project Description:
The Master Plan for Beardsley Zoo is a blueprint for change over the next
ten years. The changes involve both redevelopment of existing features and
addition of new ones. The introduction of gateways and thematic loop trails
clarify the Zoo’s zoogeographic exhibit organization. Extrication of the existing
Farmyard from the midst of wildlife exhibits and creation of a Victorian garden
precinct around an historic greenhouse and carousel clarify previously puzzling
areas. The Plan introduces Asian species, expands the North American exhibits
into twelve acres of newly acquired land and proposes fifteen new buildings
for exhibits, administration, education, a restaurant, gift shop and other
practical functions. The Plan proposes access and circulation improvements,
as well, for buses, visitor parking and trackless trolley rides. This redevelopment
and expansion envisioned by the Master Plan is an ambitious program to transform
Beardsley Zoological Gardens into an exciting regional resource.
EDC Principal Thomas Elmore was a project landscape architect on this project
and prepared the budget projections while with another firm. This project
received a Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects Connecticut
Chapter in 1997.
