RIVERWALK
Urban Park Design Riverfront Recapture, Inc.
Hartford, Connecticut
Project Data-
Date: 1994
Size: one mile long
Context: Connecticut River, Hartford, Connecticut
Project Description:
Riverwalk will reconnect people to the shoreline of the Connecticut River
while connecting Riverside Park to the north with Charter Oak Park to the
south. The park is located within the floodplain and along the dike. Its main
walkway is universally accessible and meanders around existing trees, over
oil pipelines, and around bridge abutments. The context provided many design
suggestions including plant materials that must survive the spring floods,
decorative and ornamental construction details from existing bridge architecture,
and rest/seating areas that provide fantastic views up and down the river.
EDC Principal Thomas Elmore provided technical support in site grading, layout
and construction detailing as well as some design support prior to leaving
the design firm of record.
