MAIN STREET AND HARRISON AVENUE
Intersection Improvements
Springfield, Massachusetts
Project Data-
Date: 2001
Size: 0.2 acre/pie shaped
Context: SW corner of major intersection
Project Description: The SW corner of this major intersection
offers visitors to Springfield their first impression of the city. The purpose
of this project is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the intersection,
while removing a public sidewalk from private property. Elmore Design Collaborative,
Inc. worked closely with the City of Springfield’s Planning Department, Office
of Community Development, DPW, Legal Department, representatives of the property
owners and Peter Pan bus company. Each representative brought their own diverse
requirements for the site, which we successfully incorporated into the final
schematic design. The final plan respects private property ownership, without
accentuating its linear constraints. The cohesive design incorporates pedestrian
access and gathering opportunities, a bus shelter, a curvilinear retaining/seating
walls, period lights and trash receptacles, public art and sculptural opportunities,
multi-seasonal plantings for year-round interest and emergency access to underground
utilities.
