PLEASANT TOWER APARTMENTS
Parking and Site Improvements
Worcester Housing Authority
Worcester, Massachusetts
Project Data-
Date: 2002-2003
Size: 1.3 acres
Context: Inner city, high rise residential building
Project Description:
Pleasant Valley Apartments is a multi-story residential tower located in the
heart of Worcester, Massachusetts. The purpose of this project is to improve
existing site conditions including replace crumbling asphalt pavement, increase
the number of parking spaces, replace concrete curb with granite curb, replace
broken concrete walkways, install new fence along Pleasant and Sever Street,
provide recommendations for improving the rear courtyard and other minor site
improvements. All of this work was accomplished within a tight budget and
tight design and construction schedule. Our work began with a thorough site
assessment. The scope of improvements was laid out in two schematic design
alternatives that were supported with detailed budget projections. We worked
closely with the Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) to modify one of the schematic
designs, shown below, and then prepared construction documents that came in
under budget. Our final design included the major features of the Client’s
program as well as changing a chain link fence to an ornamental fence along
Pleasant Street. This change significantly improves the curb appeal of the
residential tower while keeping the project within budget. During construction,
we worked closely with WHA and the contractor to insure the successful implementation
of the approved design.
