Historic Landscape Report Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island

Project Data-
Date: 1992
Size: 11 acres
Context: Historic Newport, Rhode Island

Project Description:
Research and document the garden’s history, its designers, design prototypes, functions and materials; inventory, document and assess existing conditions; document changes over time with a landscape chronology The Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island owns and maintains several historic properties with significant landscapes, each exemplary of different periods of American architecture and landscape design prior to 1920. Horace Trumbauer designed E.J. Berwind’s “cottage”, The Elms, as a tribute to the French classical tradition. This formal design style is expressed well in the lower terrace and sunken garden (1907 – c. 1920), shown below, which serves as counterpoint to the residence and unifying device among the estate’s various parts. The historic landscape report on this garden by EDC Principal Thomas Elmore is presently guiding its restoration.
