SUSAN B. ANTHONY HOUSE
Cultural Landscape Report The Susan B. Anthony House, Inc. Rochester, New
York
Project Data
Date: 2001
Size: 0.1 acre
Context: Working-class neighborhood
Project Description:
Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) worked hard all of her life, the second half
of which was dedicated to social reform and women’s rights. She is considered
to be one of the foremost leaders of the suffrage movement. Her work and struggles,
as well as that of many others, paved the way for women’s rights in the United
States, the most notable of which was their right to vote, which came fourteen
years after her death. She continues to be a prominent figure in American
history. Miss Anthony’s home, located at 17 Madison Street in Rochester, New
York, is a house museum. She lived in the house for forty-four years, during
which time significant changes to the house and some changes to the design,
layout and character of the landscape were made. The historical documentation
pertaining to the design and development of the landscape and gardens is limited.
The present knowledge of the site suggests that the property was a simple
landscape with few, if any, elaborate embellishments typical of the Victorian
period. The property has been modified and lovingly restored several times
since 1906.
Elmore Design Collaborative, Inc. prepared this Cultural Landscape Report
(CLR) as part of a larger Historic Structures Report prepared by John G. Waite
Associates Architects, PLLC (Lead Consultant). The CLR recommends specific
strategies for restoring the site’s integrity and historical appearance. Work
included archival research, site assessment (inventory, analysis, and evaluation),
an analysis of significance and integrity, treatment recommendations, and
the development of an Existing Conditions Plan, a Period of Significance Plan,
and a Restoration Plan. When fully implemented, these improvements will restore
Miss Anthony’s historic vernacular landscape and enhance the visit of each
guest.
