Charlottesville, Virginia
Project Data:
Date: 2003-2005
Size: 1,153 acres & 578 bldgs.
Scope: 24 core landscapes with 149 landscape bldgs.
Context: Historic designed campus January 2004
Project Description:
The University of Virginia (UVA), a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO
in 1987, is experiencing rapid growth and developmental pressure. As a result,
its 149 historical buildings and landscapes, all 40 years old or older, are
being researched and assessed for their long-term viability and potential
removal or “modernization”. Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village lies in
the center of the campus that’s architectural and landscape design styles
illustrate campus planning up to the present day. The purpose of this project
is research, document and assess the character-defining features, materials,
qualities, and historic significance that make UVA’s historic resources important
to the University, state and national communities. The Historic Preservation
Master Plan is multi-faceted. It is a catalog of research, documentation,
guidelines and recommendations for these historic resources. Our Plan will
eliminate their rapid removal without thorough documentation and without fully
understanding their significance. This Master Plan sets the groundwork so
all future growth and development will respect and/or incorporate UVA’s historic
resources.
